SydeBoob Duo will be performing a modern program of existing and original music from their upcoming record release, Au Naturel. The existing works are by Rebecca Saunders, Kate Soper, Anthony Braxton, and Beat Furrer. They will share original works written for them by composers Eric Moe, Ramin Akhavijou, and Anthony R. Green.SydeBoob Duo is a contemporary chamber music duo for the 21st Century located in Brooklyn, NY. Made up of soprano vocalist Anna Elder and flutist Sarah Steranka, they perform and commission contemporary chamber music at the highest level, often pushing the boundaries of modern techniques while honoring traditional classical music performance practices. Their sound blends modern performance practices that might involve electronics, improvisation, thorny extended techniques, and traditional sounds associated with their instruments that would be common in any era of classical music and most importantly make their mothers happy. They’ve been playing together since 2015, but formed SydeBoob officially in 2020. Their name is a term for soft-bodied women that has been taken back by modern feminists about ownership of what society deems to be “unsightly body fat.” In taking the term back, they are declaring that we own our bodies, our decisions, our minds, and our musical practice. They are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of contemporary performance, amplifying the voices of female artists, and using alternative performance mediums to invite listeners into a more unique and challenging listening space.
Zach Hannah, the Johnstone Fund’s Poet in Residence, will recite a poem revealing his interpretation of the program.
Admission is free. This performance is part of the “New Music at Short North Stage” concert series. Seating is available on a first-come first-served basis and performances are recommended for ages 9 and older. Parking assistance is available through the ParkColumbus app.
