This is the right place to continue your jazz journey by learning to switch between the two roles - initiator and responder - while feeling the groove and joy of dancing Lindy hop. ✨
This is a course for people with some prior experience (arround 4-5 months of dancing) in lindy hop, who want to continue learning while focusing on both roles at the same time, as well as for people with more experience who want to learn a secondary role from the ground up.
We believe that shifting the change in initiative during dance brings more presence and connection and that by sliding between the roles of initiator and responder, everyone can experience the joy found in both roles.
Switching also comes with a dynamic more focused on surprize, and therefore enhancing playfulness in dance.
Last but not least, this course will help with swing dancing skills in general, whether you decide that switch dancing is for you or not: understanding each movement from both "parts" involved helps refining and adjusting no matter what role you choose.

•• APPROACH ••
Our approach of this dance vocabulary is synchronized with developing body awareness. We will work on technique and, at the same time, on experimenting with movement: continuing to improve the basic structure of lindy hop for both roles in the dance, while using practices inspired by contemporary dance practices, various practical and conceptual, poetical proposals to think about movement in relation to music, our body and our dance partner.
While the core emphasis of the course is on partnered dance, elements of solo jazz will be studied in parallel and integrated into the usual partnered vocabulary, to balance the focus on connection with the focus on individual growth into personal freedom of expression. We are thrilled to accompany dancers in the journey of finding their voice and personal flavor in movement!

•• DANCE HISTORY ••
Lindy hop is an African-American dance and since its birth in Harlem, NY, in the 20s and until today, it has been explored and carried further by decades of social dance and by the in-depth research of passionate dancers and thinkers all around the world.
As part of the swing dance family, lindy hop is danced on jazz music and, just like jazz, it speaks about exercising personal freedom within a structured vocabulary and bringing individual nuances to the surface while honoring its historical legacy.
Despite challenging times of blatant social inequality and racial stereotypes, Lindy Hop alchemized into a dance language speaking of joy, liberation, exuberance, playfulness and connection.
We will periodically bring elements of this historical context into conversation, during classes, training sessions and dedicated events.
