THE ORIGINAL Swim to the Wreck! On Independence Day morning around 8:00 a.m. (a/k/a Fourth of July) we will be celebrating our nation’s 249th birthday with a swim to the S.S. Breconshire (a/k/a the Boiler Wreck) and champagne toast around the flag that is posted on the wreck.
The Sunrunners group started this event 20 years ago with under 20 people doing the 1/4 mile swim out to the wreck. Now it has grown to almost 1,000 people coming out with their friends and family to enjoy a beautiful morning on the ocean. You don't want to miss the fun!
This is open to any and all who want to participate and those that don’t want to swim can bring floats, kayaks or paddle boards (we need a few of those to carry the champagne and for us to hang onto out there). Sunrise is around 6:30am.
The swim is about 1/4 mile from the shore to the wreck. Most times you can see the bottom the entire way. Masks and snorkels are welcome!
DO NOT STAND ON THE WRECK! We want to enjoy this historic site for years to come, so please do not stand on it. This ship has been under the water for 130 years.
We meet on the beach right behind Coste d'Este or the Ocean Grill. Lots of parking at Sexton Plaza.
This is a BYOB event, but usually there is enough to go around if you don’t have something.
Kids are welcome, of course, and can bring their favorite, legal beverage of choice.
No RSVP is required; just show up and swim, paddle, bring your floats and your fun spirit!
Please spread the word to anyone you think might be interested.
