Since 2018, we have returned each year since to view the Chimney Swifts roosting at sunset in a chimney near St. Patrick’s Catholic School. Join us at 7:45 PM Sunday, May 12, 2024 (Mother's Day) and at 7:45 PM Sunday, May 19, 2024 to watch (and count) Chimney Swifts flying into a tall chimney moments after sunset. This time is chosen to have us in place before sunset. Attendees should bring a chair, binoculars and enjoy the swifts for up to 30 minutes after sunset. We expect to be there for 45-60 minutes. Parking for this event is in the school’s side lot at 999 Westmoreland Ave, Norfolk.
Here is a link to a count last fall: https://ebird.org/checklist/S148830004. Chimney Swifts are in our region April to September, with a few that arrive in late March and a few that linger into early October. They migrate to/from South America. You can read more here about Chimney Swifts' life history and how to identify them by sight and sound: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Chimney_Swift/overview. And Cape Henry Audubon Society’s website offers Chimney Swift info too: http://www.chasnorfolk.org/chimneyswiftproject.html
