Swallows Day in Capistrano Train Tour

On St. Joseph's Day at Mission San Juan Capistrano, the main event marked by bell ringing, live music, and historical presentations, all centered around the legend of the swallows' return.

Have a great day seeing Southern California Heritage sites at their best with one all-inclusive fee while saving the planet and encouraging train ridership, just like we did in the days of the red cars!

Our Executive Director, Zoot Velasco, will lead the tour on the Metro and Metrolink trains to San Juan Capistrano. As recommended by the mission staff, going on Wednesday (the actual St. Joseph’s Day) will allow us to enjoy the festivities and tours of the momentous occasion without the crowds that come the following Saturday for the parade and festival.

• We will gather at 7:15 AM at the Del Mar Metro Station. Parking and drop-off at the Station are easy.
• We will take the metro to Union Station where Zoot will briefly tour our beautiful Union Station, the last to be completed in the country in 1939.
• We will board the Metrolink train to San Juan Capistrano at 8:30 AM for the 8:40 departure.
• We will arrive in Capistrano at 10:05 and walk to the mission blocks away.
• We will enjoy the festivities and tours in the morning and return to the old town area for a late lunch, so feel free to bring a snack.
• We will enjoy a pre-fixe lunch as a group in a famous OLd Town restaurant (TBD)
• After lunch, we will take a walking tour of the old town district near the train station provided by the Historical Society.
• At 3:30 PM, we will depart on the Metrolink train back to Union Station and arrive at 5:20 PM
• We will take the Metro back to Del Mar arriving by 6 PM.
• We will top off the day with pizza from La Grande Orange next to the station and happy hour (drinks are on your own)!
