SVSU Piano Day, Nov. 22-23, 2024 Piano Day is an event designed to broaden the knowledge and inspire young pianists in our community through masterclasses, lectures, and recitals. The event is open not only to solo young pianists but also to piano ensemble groups. It is hosted by Dr. Chia-Ying Chan, a member of the SVSU piano faculty, and features guest artists. Invited participants will perform in the Gala Concert or masterclass, attend the lecture, and participate in a discussion forum. Achievement certificate will be awarded to all participants, with the ceremony is scheduled at the end of the event. Our guest artist this year is Robert McDonald, a highly accomplished soloist and chamber musician. He is also a renowned piano professor at The Julliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music, where he holds the Penelope P. Watkins Chair in piano studies. He will give a solo recital on November 22nd and will join Dr. Chan for a performance at Gala Concert, which will conclude the event on November 23rd.
Eligibility
Gala Concert: All pre-college and college-aged pianists are welcomed to register. Video audition is not required.
Masterclass: All pre-college, college aged pianists are welcomed to register. The masterclasses for the 2024 SVSU Piano Day will be conducted by featured guest artist Robert McDonald and SVSU piano faculty Chia-Ying Chan. Participants will perform on stage, receiving feedback from the master teachers. Audition is required to participate in the masterclass with Prof. Robert McDonald, while no audition is needed for the masterclass with Dr. Chia-Ying Chan. Auditing is available to the public.
Lectures: All participants are invited to attend the lecture, which will be followed by a short Q & A session. Auditing is available to the public.
Guest Artist Recital: This event is opened to the public.

12:00-1:00 pm: Lunch (at your own expense)
1:00-1:50 pm: Masterclass with Dr. Chia-Ying Chan
2:00-2:45 pm: Clinic - A Conversation with Pianist Robert McDonald.
3:00-4:30 pm: Gala Concert/ Closing Ceremony (open to college and pre-college participants)
This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required for the participants and is highly recommended for auditors from the community.
