About this Event

Join us for our first installment of Sustainable Sundays at the Burncoat Center for Arts and Wellness! Every 2 months we will host a workshop, class, or event that will focus on different ways to live more sustainably, fix or repair what you have, and clever ways to reuse materials, based on the season.

Our first workshop is SEPTEMBER 29th from 4-8pm. From 4-6:30 we will be hosting a clothing swap AND an upcycled t-shirt decorating class. We will be discussing the challenges in the textile industry and how to keep clothing circulating within our community, and out of landfills. In order to cover the costs of the swap and class, a sliding scale fee of $10-$20 will be collected in order to participate.

Clothing Swap: Please bring 1-2 bags of washed and clean clothes to swap. No rips, stains, or dirty clothes will be accepted. You will be asked to sort your clothes by size onto the appropriate table. You can stay as long as you want, to take clothes up to the amount that you brought to swap. All leftover clothes will be donated to local organizations and shelters at the end of the event. (Please contact us if your organization or shelter would like to receive the leftover items)

Upcycled shirt workshop: Please bring 1-2 shirts to upcycle into a new piece of clothing. We will have iron on patches, fabric paint, gems, applique's, fabric scraps, and thread for visible mending.

Sliding scale fee of $10-$20 to participate

From 7-8pm, we will begin a film screening of "REUSE! because you can't recycle the planet". This screening is FREE. If you would like to only come for the feature film, please arrive around 6:45pm. Bring a picnic dinner and a blanket or lawn chairs and join us in the side yard! We will have an open discussion after the event as well.

(Director) Alex Eaves, of Stay Vocal, is a reuse expert who embodies the reuse lifestyle. In 2008, he began what he calls “the reuse life;” avoiding disposables and finding reuse solutions for his needs and wants. This passion soon began to be an influence on many and in 2009, Eaves began giving talks and leading workshops around the U.S.

"This film isn't about our waste problem. It's about solutions. And they are everywhere! We live in a challenging time. Climate change and mass consumption is threatening our planet's existence. Excessive extraction of natural resources has created immeasurable waste and pollution. This issue is complicated and imminent. While recognition and awareness is important, direct action is by far the most effective. But traditional recycling is not enough. The reuse mission offers a more sustainable solution that everyone can be a part of.REUSE! Because You Can't Recycle The Planet follows Reuse Pro Alex Eaves' cross-country adventure to the 48 contiguous U.S. states. On his journey,he finds endless reuse solutions for our waste problem that are not only sustainable, but many of which are easy and fun! And he learns just how reuse truly benefits "people, planet, and wallet."
