When choosing a book to share with a child, there is nothing better than a good adventure, especially one based on a true story. In this picture book adaptation of local author Susan Conrad's Inside: One Woman's Journey Through the Inside Passage, we follow the dream of a little girl’s big adventure in a tiny kayak. A talking kayak? A dreaming child? YES! Together they encounter magic and mayhem on a journey through a breathtaking land of challenge and reward. Join Kami the Kayak and her paddler Suz, along with a host of outdoor friends on a wondrous seafaring adventure to Alaska. All ages will learn that we are all capable of anything—and will always reach our destination—if we simply believe.
Susan Conrad grew up on a farm in upstate New York where she wandered wildly through acres of ponds, creeks, and forests. Her favorite things are the outdoors, water, and adventure. (A great combination, don't you think?) Now she lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest with her partner, along with a ridiculously large dog, and two normal-sized cats. She's a Washington State Book Award finalist and a Journey Award grand prize winner of the Chanticleer International Book Awards. When she's not writing or paddling you may find her huffing up mountains, swooshing down ski slopes, or furiously pedaling her bicycle to be on time for dinner.
Rebecca Rothman is an illustrator and graphic designer living in Seattle. Growing up on a steady diet of Edward Gorey, Maurice Sendak and Beatrix Potter, she naturally found her happy place in the cozy space between creepy and quaint. Inspired by the connection among all forms of life, she believes that tiny acts of kindness can change the world. Her most favorite things: dogs, coffee, copic markers, yoga, fancy cocktails, tasty snacks, vinyl, crazy socks, her garden, riding her bike, and dogs - always dogs.
* Online registration closes one hour prior to the event. Walk-ins will be welcome if there are available spaces.
