DAY 1: Saturday, June 15th, 9am - 4:30pm
9-9:30am, Intro to Breathing with Rockie
9:30-11am, Mobility with Sana
11-2pm, Strength with Bia
2-2:30pm, Lunch Break
2:30-3:30pm, Breathwork Session with Rockie
3:30-4pm, Optional Cold Plunge Session
Start the day with an intro to breathing (4 techniques) and ignite our system with lymphatic movements. From there we will assess three major “sticking points” that limit our pop-up to athletic stance for board control and maneuverability. Building upon what we find, learn mobility-based exercises and movements that enhance the quality of your pop-up as well as the speed and depth.
After we are loosened up, we will go right into our first surf-specific workout that’ll target our upper body muscles. By focusing on your upper body, you'll enhance your paddling power, enabling you to catch waves more efficiently and with greater speed. Meanwhile, strengthening your core will not only improve your balance and control, but also enhance your endurance, allowing you to ride waves with finesse and confidence. A sturdy core provides stability and control on the board, enabling you to execute maneuvers with precision and confidence. Consistency with the exercises taught will translate to increased resilience in the water, empowering you to tackle any surf conditions with skill and ease!
Lunch break: approximately 30 mins. Please bring your meal, although light snacks and water will be provided.
We’ll begin to unwind our day with a breathwork session. Many people face anxiety in the water due to crowds, size, strength, and previous experiences. This is where regulating your nervous system comes in. The type of breathwork we use to accomplish this is a 3 part continuous breathing pattern with inhale and exhale through an open mouth. Breathwork provides breakthroughs within us for stress relief, insights, clarity and energy. This will help downregulate our central nervous system to improve adaptability with external life stressors, including while in the water.
Finally, we will wrap up our first workshop day with a cold plunge in our Edge Theory Labs Ice Tub. Aside from the numerous benefits that an ice bath can provide, combining breathwork with ice baths may further improve circulation, oxygenation, reduce inflammation, and overall recovery from strenuous exercise.
DAY 2: Sunday, June 16th 9am-2pm
9-9:30am - Lymphatic Drainage Self-Massage + Breathing Techniques
9:30-11am - Mobility with Sana
11-12:30pm - Strength with Bia
12:30-2pm - Breathwork Session with Rockie
We return for day two and start with energizing our body for the day with a lymphatic drainage self-massage. With circulation now flowing, we will start mobility for paddling - a common area where people experience neck, back, and shoulder pain. We assess, again, some common sticking points and learn how to improve them, as well as strive for an optimal movement pattern for our paddling power.
Once we have warmed up by exploring our full range of motion, we will work on our lower body strength. Strengthening your quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes helps you generate the explosive force needed for quick pop-ups onto your board. By incorporating proper plyometric exercises, we enhance your ability to explode into action, mirroring the dynamic movements required in surfing. Balance exercises will also be a focus integrated to improve proprioception and stability, essential for maintaining control and maneuverability on the board.
We will wrap Sunday up with final breathwork techniques focusing on breath holds with a drill simulating requirements of holding your breath in the water to really get you ready for the waves. We will end the weekend with some simple breathing techniques to return to calmness and close out your SurfWork journey!
