About the Facilitator: Liyu Makonnen, Africa Centre's PARSSY Program Coordinator
Liyu leads and manages the PARSSY program, a community initiative supporting at-risk youth in schools. She oversees all aspects of the program, which encourages diverse youth to engage in productive, healthy, and culturally enriching activities, reducing school disciplinary actions and early entry into the justice system.
Under her leadership, PARSSY has proven effective in improving educational outcomes and motivation while providing a strong sense of community and support. Liyu also works closely with parents to build understanding and strengthen their engagement in their children’s education. Additionally, she supports Black Student Associations (BSAs) at three Edmonton high schools, enhancing the program’s impact and fostering positive relationships through restorative practices.
