Pumping Mechanics (10:00am - 12:00pm)

This presentation is designed to provide lactation experts with a detailed understanding of the mechanics of breast pumping. It aims to explore the physiological and technical aspects of milk expression through pumping, highlighting the interplay between human anatomy and pump technology. By delving into the principles underlying effective milk extraction, this session seeks to enhance the ability of lactation consultants to support and guide parents in their breast pumping journey, optimizing both comfort and efficiency.

Objectives:

  • Provide an overview of how breast pumps work.
  • Explore the structure of the lactating breast and how it responds to the mechanical stimulation provided by a breast pump.
  • Analyze the differences between manual, electric, and hospital-grade pumps, focusing on their mechanisms of action and suitability for various pumping needs.
  • Provide strategies for adjusting suction levels and pumping patterns to mimic natural nursing rhythms and enhance milk flow.
  • Emphasize the significance of selecting the right flange size for efficient milk extraction and reducing discomfort during pumping.
  • Discuss the role of the milk ejection reflex in pumping and provide tips to stimulate this reflex for improved milk yield.
  • Address common challenges faced by pumping parents, such as insufficient milk output, nipple pain, and pump maintenance.
  • Discuss proper storage techniques to preserve milk quality & for maximizing pumping efficiency.
  • Discuss recent advancements in breast pump technology and their potential impact on the pumping experience.

I Go To Work: Supporting Working Parents with Milk Expression (1:00pm - 3:00pm)

The transition back to work can be a challenging time for breastfeeding parents. This presentation aims to equip lactation consultants with the tools and knowledge needed to effectively support working parents who are breast pumping. We will explore the unique challenges faced by this group, including navigating workplace accommodations, maintaining milk supply, and balancing work responsibilities with pumping needs. Practical strategies for creating a supportive pumping schedule, ensuring safe milk storage, and advocating for parental rights in the workplace will be discussed. Additionally, we will address the emotional aspects of pumping at work and the importance of providing ongoing support and resources. By understanding the needs of working pumping parents and offering tailored guidance, lactation consultants can play a crucial role in helping them continue their breastfeeding journey while meeting their professional goals.

Objectives:

  • Recognize the unique obstacles that working parents encounter when pumping, such as time constraints, privacy concerns, and maintaining milk supply.
  • Assist parents in choosing the right breast pump for their needs and offer tips on using it efficiently in a work environment.
  • Develop a pumping schedule that aligns with their work routine and supports their milk supply.
  • Educate on safely storing and transporting breast milk from work to home.
  • Discuss Legal Rights and Workplace Accommodations.
  • Discuss tips for managing time and stress, and maintaining work productivity while pumping.
  • Address the emotional challenges of pumping at work.
  • Encourage parents to connect with other working pumping parents for support and advice.
  • Brainstorm resources for continued support.
