This workshop is for Health Professionals only and is not suitable for family members/ whānau looking after relatives or friends in a community setting.
Most people living with a life limiting will need the assistance of a non-professional carer such as a family member, friend, or neighbour to provide physical, emotional, and practical caring supports. A significant portion of these support people can feel overwhelmed, isolated and experience psychological and/or financial distress. Carers do have unmet needs, information changes throughout the illness journey.
Palliative care recognises the needs of carers/support people is as important as those of the person living with a life limiting illness.
Health care providers need to have the knowledge and skills to provide practical information to assist the carer/support person to meet the holistic needs of their loved one, in the last months/weeks/days of life, and to instil confidence and knowledge so they know what to expect.
At the end of the session participants will:
- Understand the needs of carers supporting palliative patients
- Aquire skills to assist them to be able to navigate sensitive communications and social needs of carers (e.g., Finances, NASC, ARC, prognosis-mop up from conversation that have caused distress)
- Understand how to support psycho-emotional and spiritual needs of carers
- Appreciate what practical advice and education carers need to support their caregiver role:
- Practical skills such as administering Medic*tion, preventing pressure ulcers, reducing falls risk, providing oral cares, transferring, changing a battery on a Syringe Driver etc.
- What to expect when someone is dying
- Target audience: Health Care Professionals in all settings
- Limited attendees: Early registration is advised.
