Join us for a Spanish language Surervisory Skills and Leadership Training with Leo Garcia

When: November 5th-7th 9am-2:00pm

Where: OSU Extension Office Conference Room(2990 Experiment Station Dr., Hood River, OR 97031)

Cost: $115

This interactive workshop will be taught by veteran educator Leo Garcia formerly of Wenatchee Valley College. This training will span three- 5 hour days - coffee, snacks, lunch and training materials will be provided.

Supervisory skills: Many supervisory skill development will be included throughout the workshop. Participants will work with real life examples of management situations, and situations they have experienced putting to use the information learned.

Who is a supervisor/what is a supervisor?

· Skills and abilities that must be learned to become an effective supervisor.

· Small vs larger farms - Where does the supervisor fit into the management structure.

Responsibilities of a supervisor:

· Communication – oral, written, body language.

· Cultural awareness - Who is your workforce?

· Motivation – goal setting and workforce expectations

· Creating a culture of compliance and safety

· Power that comes with the nature of the position – Not enough power, or abuse of power

· Possible kinds of abuse of power – verbal, favoritism, sexual, black mail, this for that, etc.

· Discrimination laws – do these laws apply equally to every place of work?

· Company policies – Work policies, equipment use, training.

· Conflict management – discipline procedures, what to do, and what not to do.

· Dismissal – hiring and firing policy procedures.


Leo García

Is a graduate of Washington State University with a BS in Horticulture. He worked for Washington State tree fruit and viticulture industries for the last 32 years starting as an Orchard Employee, Crew Supervisor, Fieldman, Orchard Manager, and Lead Horticulture Professor and Director of the Latino Agricultural Programs at Wenatchee Valley College until his retirement in 2021. Garcia created, developed, and implemented the Hispanic Orchard Employee Education Program (HOEEP) at Wenatchee Valley College 28 years ago. The program is still going strong with more than 2,000 graduates. He also has served in numerous Advisory Boards and have provided educational opportunities for the ag industries through his Agricultural Training and Consulting business for more than 20 years.
