I started this course because, as a working writer, I know how essential having a good writing practice is and how easily it can be lost. My name is Cherie Gilmour and my writing appears in the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, MiNDFOOD magazine, The Big Issue among others. You can see my work here: https://cherielee87.portfolial.com/articles-page-3/By writing practice, I mean experimenting with different ways of generating ideas and stories, which I’ve broken down into 6 different subjects, one for each week.
Class is a combination of listening to or watching creating/writing practitioners (see reading list below) discussing a particular idea and then doing a series of writing exercises relating to that idea (or in the case of ‘Reading Like a Writer’, we do a close reading on a number of short creative texts). These exercises can take the form of whatever writing style you're interested in, or writing already (ie. poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction etc)
You’ll also be given ‘homework’, writing exercises to take home, chapters from books to read and resources to check out. By the end of the course, you should feel fully equipped to pursue your own writing practice or boost it if you already have one. In the final week, we’ll share something we’ve been working on during the course.
The fee for the course is $230 (which can be paid in installments as long as the full amount is paid by course completion)
Class takes place 7:30pm - 9pm Wednesday nights at the Torquay Community House starting February 26th, 2025.
