Uncontrollable passion tragedy murder suicide and the anguish of an illegitimate child fuel the stories of these two one-act Italian operas that are often performed together. These classics of the “verismo style” (realistic drama of common people) are full of powerful music that effectively carries the drama towards the resolutions of the stories. Both operas deal with the hardship and social constructs placed on women who do not conform to the rules of society and religion. Hear the famous Intermezzo in Cavalleria as well as several arias that have been featured in movies such as “The Godfather.”
