About this Event
CCQ cultural awareness and cultural safety training, will help participants extend their knowledge about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture, explore how attitudes and values can influence perceptions, assumptions and behaviours in a clinical setting, and discuss key ways the entire health care team can be more culturally aware.
Attendees are taken on a journey of reflection to understand the historical impacts and government policies, and how we can further build, support and engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders across communities with shared insight to develop a stronger understanding, of connection to country, family and cultural obligations.

Strait Islander Health
Gordon identifies as a proud Aboriginal and South Sea Islander, saltwater man, his family have strong connection to the Fingal Heads, Coodjinburra clan, part of the Bundjalung Yugembeh Nation, he also has connection to the South Sea Islands from Malatia, Tanna and Epi Islands.
Current living in the Gympie Region, Gordon has 25 year’s experience in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health in Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions.

Learning Outcomes
- Discuss and respond to Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander history, with reference to culture, local history and socioeconomic factors that impact health outcomes.
- Describe and define the terms ‘cultural awareness’, ‘cultural competency’ and 'cultural safety' and identify key differences.
- Identify barriers and enablers to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people accessing mainstream health services.
- Interpret specific programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander patients in primary care.
- Demonstrate and discuss quality improvements that can be implemented in your workplace to create a culturally safe place.
