ABOUT THE EVENT:

The age of the Internet has accelerated the spread of misinformation, further it enables virtually anyone to become an author of inaccurate information that can be transmitted to roughly 60% of the world’s population who have access to digital technology. False and misleading information has impacted every aspect of society including health care and the beauty industry. Digital rumors and inaccurate data have caused numerous segments of society to become distrustful of science and scientific experts. The safety and efficacy of sunscreens is currently a hot topic that is subject to such misinformation, resulting in distrust of scientists responsible for ensuring the safety of skin care products. Social media assertions range from opinions that sunscreens are ineffective, contain a cocktail of toxic ingredients that may cause more harm than benefit for the health of people. Concerns include estrogens in cosmetic and sunscreen products acting as hormone disruptors, concern for the possibility that sunscreens penetrate skin at dangerous levels. If certain sun filters do penetrate skin what are the key factors of skin penetration, are the penetrants toxic, how does one test for skin penetration, is there a way to formulate that minimize or prevent skin penetration? Another concern associated with sunscreens is the degree of ecological harm directly caused by sunscreen use. Sale of sunscreens containing organic filters are banned in Hawaii and legislation may spread to other states in the future. How is ecological risk assessed, to what extent do sunscreens impact the environment? Currently, zinc and titanium filters are sun filters of interest of formulators as they are permitted for sunscreen sale in Hawaii and not pending further penetration studies by the FDA. However, it is difficult to formulate high SPF and UVA protection with exceptional transparency that all skin types prefer. Formulating strategies to achieve elegant, high SPF and UVA protection strategies will be presented.
