Met speciale gast bassist Tony OverwaterEr was meteen een klik toen de IJslandse pianiste Sunna Gunnlaugs en basklarinettist Maarten Ornstein begin 2013 wat berichten uitwisselden op Twitter. Die zomer speelden ze hun eerste concert op het Reykjavik Jazz Festival, één dag nadat ze elkaar voor het eerst in het echt ontmoetten. Het spelen beviel, de reacties waren geweldig en dus werd besloten om een vervolg te geven aan het duo.
In 2015 namen ze in IJsland een album op met grotendeels eigen composities. De muziek is ruimtelijk, transparant en ongekunsteld. De CD, getiteld Unspoken, werd in januari 2016 gepresenteerd in het Bimhuis.
Nu, in 2021, is dan eindelijk de tweede CD op komst! In October wordt het nieuwe album opgenomen met als zeer speciale gast bassist Tony Overwater, die ook vanavond meespeelt. Eerder in 2017 speelden de drie al eens samen op het Jazz International festival in Rotterdam, en London Jazz News schreef toen: “With a marvellous air of freshness in their lithe melody-making, Amsterdam-based bass clarinettist Maarten Ornstein and Icelandic pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs played duets of superb assurance and lyrical gracefulness and when they were joined by bassist Tony Overwater, forming a trio of fabulous shape and assurance that was all about quiet unshowy skill and immediately personal audience engagement.”

he Gunnlaugs - Ornstein duo was born on Twitter back in 2013 when they started exchanging tweets about life, music and anything else that mattered, culminating in a “alright let’s play..’ tweet that set the whole thing in motion.
The duo actually first met in person one day before our first gig, at Reykjavik Jazz Festival in the summer of 2013. Fast-forwarding to 2021, after having played concerts and releasing an album called Unspoken, we are proud to present new music for a new CD to be recorded later in September 2021. The music we play reflects both our musical tastes and backgrounds. It highlights our fondness of jazz that is spacious, transparent and full of detail. The piano and bass clarinet both have a huge range in octaves as well as sonically and together produce this great sound that hovers between warm and woody, and crispy metallic.
The vastness of the Icelandic landscape, dynamics of Amsterdam inner city life, volcanic eruptions and deep tranquility, this duo has it all, but we have an extra bit of icing on the cake: Bassist Tony Overwater joins the duo for some concerts and on the new recordings!
