As part of its 2020 centenary the Communist Party of Britain worked with the Communist Party of Spain and the International Brigade Memorial Trust to host a series of wreath laying events across the country in honour of the Volunteers for Liberty who died fighting fascism in Spain, these events were held on the anniversary of the International Brigadeโs Farwell parade that had taken place on 28th October 1938.In the North East of England we have worked with the Communist Party of Britain and the Communist Party of Spain to host annual events held simultaneously on Teesside and in Newcastle; last year, for example, the Teesside commemoration was held in the Heugh Battery Museum in Hartlepool - https://www.itv.com/news/tyne-tees/2024-10-27/they-were-heroes-the-teesside-volunteers-who-fought-in-the-spanish-civil-war
For the first time we will hold commemorations on Teesside, in Newcastle and now Sunderland, where we will remember the twenty three Sunderland born men and women who took action to support the Spanish Government during the Spanish Civil War, and especially the five volunteers who lost their lives serving in the International Brigade.
We will meet at the Victoria Hall Disaster Memorial at 2pm
Speaking at the commemoration will be representatives from both the Communist Parties of Britain and of Spain and members of the North East Volunteers for Liberty. We are honoured that Dr. David Scott, of The Open University has agreed to speak at our commemoration. We will also hear messages from the Association of the UK Basque children, the Associazione Nazionale Partigiani d'Italia, and the Aberdeen Trades Council.
We are honoured that poet Harry Galllagher (https://harrygallagherpoet.wordpress.com/) will be reading at the commemoration.
All are welcome, for further details email: [email protected]
