Twelve joyful slow jammers gathered at Meadowthorpe Presbyterian Church on January 4th. Starting in the key of G, we played Josie-O, Cumberland Gap, Nail that Catfish to the Tree, Sandy River Belle, Tombigbee Waltz, Cripple Creek, The Girl I Left Behind, My Old Kentucky Home, and Red Wing. We then moved to the key of D with John Stinson’s #2, Liberty, Angeline the Baker, Soldier’s Joy, Spotted Pony, Ashokan Farewell, and Over the Waterfall.
Next up were the A’s with Salt Spring, Margaret’s Waltz, and Old Horse and Buggy in A major and then finally ending with Cold Frosty Morning in A minor.
Paul is excited about the tune Salt Spring by John Reischman which is a “new” old time tune written originally for the mandolin in the key of A. I will attempt to add a link for a video with John Reischman (and others) performing in the discussion tab for reference.
We encourage everyone to come to the jam with something they are working on to share with the group.
This weekly jam is meant to bring beginners and experienced musicians together. Consider joining the roster of mentors who will help host some of the sessions. Or think about switching from your dominant instrument (or dominant hand!). This is a wonderful opportunity to slow down and focus on technique, to ask questions, and to share tips with new players.
This is an all acoustic, all ages, and all levels SLOWish JAM to play traditional Old-Time music in 3/4 and 4/4 time. No percussion or bass please, unless you are able to keep a VERY steady rhythm (acoustic/U-basses may be amplified).
