Sondheim’s enduring Tony Award-winning 1984 musical depicts two years in the life of 19th century pointillist painter, Georges Seurat, as he develops his most famous work, "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte." Georges, a brilliant but temperamental artist, struggles between his obsession with creation and his relationship with his lively and clever muse, Dot. A hundred years later, a young experimental artist named George with his own special relationship to the Seurat painting, grapples with success and his devotion to his beloved grandmother, Marie.
