Maji Safi Group (MSG) is a Boulder-based nonprofit cofounded by Boulder native Bruce Maj Pelz. For the past 12 years, we have promoted health and disease prevention in underserved and impoverished areas of the Mara Region in Tanzania. Through holistic community empowerment and by working predominantly with local women and youth, we design and implement participatory, interactive programs to create a sustainable model that will benefit present and future generations. We focus on building water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure in schools and health care facilities, on teaching health and disease prevention, on disseminating health info via Information Communication Technology, and on building WASH Hubs – community centers that offer multiple services under one roof.

Maji Safi Group’s on-the-ground staff is 100% Tanzanian and primarily female, with our key employees being Community Health Educators (CHEs). They are the face of MSG in benefiting communities. Made up entirely of host-community locals and predominantly female, our CHEs bring a historical, cultural, and language-specific perspective to the services and interventions provided. Their main role is community outreach and education. This includes personal hygiene (hand washing and menstrual hygiene management), food safety, water treatment, construction and use of latrines, malnutrition screening of children under five, education about non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension, etc. Every day, our dedicated staff works tirelessly to empower their communities through MSG’s lifesaving programmatic work.

Along the Front Range, we work with ‘Young Global Citizens’. Through schools and youth organizations, we offer programs, such as read-a-thons and water walks, to teach about global issues, social responsibility, empathy, and helping others through personal effort. At the university level, we bring graduate students into our on-the-ground programmatic work as practicum students.
