Blame the Parents Battle of the Bands for this. When Danna Paltos showed up to her first rehearsal for the St Kilda Primary Band “Primary Scream” on the premise that she could “sing a bit”, the band had one of those jaw dropping moments when she ripped a Beyonce’ song to pieces on her first go at rehearsal. Two battles later, with a victory in 2022, Danna and two other alumni from Primary Scream (Dave Leggatt and Cathy Pappas) teamed up to form the Spirit Ditch with Ricky Feldman (who competed with the Rip Offs) and drummer Andy Irwin. Andy and Dave have a simple bond – whatever band they’re in, the other one is too.The name is taken from the Sparklehorse song, inspired by the line ‘I woke up in / A burnt out basement / Sleeping with / Metal hands / In a spirit ditch’.
The songwriting of the band is prolific. From a recording session in January 2022, the Band now has some 3 hours of material to choose from. The songs are deeply reflective, personal and dive into the deep stuff. The sound is stretched across a broad canvas of country, folk, psychedelia, funk and straight out indy rockers. The vocals are sublime. Ricky’s guitar licks and solos will keep any enthusiast on the hook for more. Add some theremin, keys, note perfect backing vox and a rhythm section that plays like conjoined twins then, goddamn, we got oursels’ a band here.

The Spirit Ditch are launching the album on Sunday 21 July 2024 from 3pm at George Lane.
Supported by other “Battles” alumni Mama’s Brew, there is no better place to be on a winter Sunday afternoon in St Kilda.
