*** ALL SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAMS TAKE PLACE IN OUR MAIN CAMPUS AT JOURNAL SQUARE ***
Both middle school and high school students experience a variety of engaging and enriching programs at Continuing Education’s Summer Youth & Teen Programs. Our unique one- and two-week, hands-on programs are offered in partnership with the College’s Culinary Arts Institute. Programs emphasize self-discovery, cognitive reasoning, and cooperative thinking using a hands-on approach.
Ages 9 - 15 YRS OLD
This course offers a creative opportunity for anyone with or without experience who are interested in improving their skills in digital photography. Using any digital camera we will examine the concept of exposure, color balance, and composition and lighting techniques. We may explore projects like macro (close-up) photography, landscape, portraiture and learn about post-production editing at HCCC computer lab.
The week includes a field trip to a local destination for an on-location photo shoot & a Photo exhibit at the end of the week of each photographer.

Ages 9 - 15 YRS OLD
This course will contain material which introduces the game of chess, consisting of understanding names of pieces, how each piece moves, along with puzzles, famous games played, along dedicated time for students to play in the classroom. Lessons will Include checkmate patterns, pawn promotions/pawn endgames, understanding value of pieces and how to strategize using set pieces, traps, and fighting for the center.

This is a course that will go in depth around the elements in Chess which include Space, Time, Force, Position, Harmony, and Dynamics. Furthermore, among these 6 Elements of Chess we will review tactics along with famous thematic games played by world chess champions with puzzles included for classroom.

Get a jump-start on the SAT and impress those college recruiters with this 2 week test preparation program. Learn to use basic problem solving techniques to strengthen your abilities, while avoiding careless mistakes. Test taking skills will be provided, along with test samples from actual SAT exams.

Baking Description - Students will learn to bake kid-friendly desserts from around the world. Staring with basic knife skills and kitchen safety, students will develop techniques that build confidence in the kitchen. You can expect to make European classics such as Cream puff and Apple tarts. As well as explore modern bakeshop techniques with chocolate twists and bread pudding.

COOKING CULINARY PROGRAM
Cooking Description - Students will learn to cook kid-friendly dishes with global flavors. Staring with basic knife skills and kitchen safety, students will develop techniques that build confidence in the kitchen. You can expect to make homemade pasta from scratch, a basic marinara sauce and toaster oven pizza. Steak tacos and chicken paella will round out our culinary journey.
