Summer Art School

'Summer Art School' is taking place every Thursday (in the school holidays) between 9am-4pm, at The Young Salcombe Centre.
The art making days are lead by three experienced and qualified teachers. We are all practising artists and have a passion for learning in and through art.
This series of six workshops are all based on the theme of our oceans and can be enjoyed as one off days or as a series which sit very well together. Each day sees our little artists learning in the process of making but also we guarantee a superb quality finished piece of art to be proud of. The standard is high but we make sure that all children can achieve to the best, and beyond, of their ability and expectation.

These workshop days are suitable for children aged 6YO+
We are paediatric first aid trained and fully DBS checked.
When you book in for your day, you will need to look at the ticket choices carefully as there are discounts available.

On arrival you will be asked to sign in with a simple temporary membership form which gives us important information and permissions. These are necessary for safety and the smooth runnning of the session and we do not keep these records.

You will need to bring a packed lunch and old clothes. We provide snacks and drinks but Feel free to bring your own. Please inform us of any allergies before hand, if they are severe.

August 1st - Ceramic Coral Bottle - Caroline will be leading this workshop, showing little artists how to handbuild a vessel with clay. We'll be looking at coral reefs and how they are important and how we can help to preserve them. We'll also be looking at art inspired by coral reefs and decorating our pots with coral forms. pots will be fired and glazed and ready to pick up at the end of the summer holidays. If you do not live in Salcombe, we can arrange postage.

August 8th - Calligraphy and Etching - Didi and Sadie will be landing this workshop, demonstrating skills and techniques involved in creating beautfoul pieces of art inspired by our environment. These pieces will be of a standard size so you can frame them afterward.

August 15th - Felt Feet - For this workshop, we are going to make our own felt and shape them into feet! We'll be talking about our carbon footprint as well as drawing feet and researching different footwear in different times and cultures. See images below.

August 22nd - Underwaterworlds in Watercolour - Inspired by life in and around the oceans, we will be designing and creating our own large watercolour piece on quality paper. They will be built up over the course of the day, after drawing and studying art inspired by this theme. Again, these will be of standard size so you can easily frame them and enjoy them on your walls.

August 29th - Batik Pillow and cushion cases - Batik day is always a favourite! We'll be looking at shapes and forms of the ocean to help us design and striking image which we will transfer onto white cotton and make into a pillow case or cushion cover. The design and make process is carefully guided and stepped through to embed understanding and further skills levels.

September 3rd - Plastic Yarn 'Plarn' loom weaving mats and hats - For our last session of the season, we're going to repurpose plastic bags and make our own rope and yarn, or PLARN. Once we have done this, we will demonstrate different ways you can use this to weave or crochet to make a roll mat or even a hat! We will be sparking conversations about the use and desposal of plastic amd how this can affect out oceans and waters.
