ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Explore Milk Paint Printing!

Learn how to create inks from natural materials like onion skins, leaves, tree bark, minerals, roots, mushrooms, berries, charcoal, and nuts. These natural inks can be ‘painted’ onto cotton fabric to create fun designs and patterns, and once dried, the printed fabric is safe to wash and use. Participants will also leave with milk-paint so they can continue their experiments at home!

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR

Kiran P. Gill (he/they/she) is a Malaysian-Canadian textile artist and student of craft and labour history based in Brampton, Ontario. He was born in Subang Jaya, Malaysia to an Irish-Canadian mother and Punjabi Sikh father. Kiran researches textile consumption and the historic and ongoing relationship between textile production and exploitative labour practices, imperialism, and the environment.

His artistic practice centres pre-industrial, culture-specific textile traditions within the scope of natural dyeing, weaving, yarn spinning, and quilting. With his work, he seeks to reconsider the material cultures of his ancestors within new contexts, combining Eastern and Western traditions. A Canada Council grant recipient, he was an artist-in-residence at the Icelandic Textile Center in Blönduós, Iceland (May 2022) and in Winter 2023 will be in residence at Rimbun Dahan in Selangor, Malaysia.

Kiran is currently working part-time on his BFA in Material Art and Design (Textiles) at OCAD University and a 6-year part-time Spinning Certificate program with OHS and Fleming College.
