Suminagashi marbling is an ancient Japanese art form which combines the practice of working with calm water and sumi ink to create deliberate patterns. Suminagashi relies on the tensile strength of water and is traditionally carried out in black and white scale. The technique teaches patience and calm deliberation through placing the inks and allowing them to spread and merge, interjecting intentional patterns only after the inks have spread over the surface of the water. This results in a perfect mindfulness exercise of clean modern patterning. In this class, learn how to create patterns and manipulate the inks on various practice papers before imprinting fine Habotai silk to create a wearable textile.
