WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:Enrich your watercolor toolbox with freehand brush painting. Joan Lok will conduct a two-day Sumi-e workshop covering a variety of flowers and birds in delightful freehand brushwork to
celebrate Floridian living.
October 5th, 2024: Introduction to Sumi-e. The Hibiscus and Lotus 1
The morning session will introduce the fundamentals of Sumi-e and painting of Hibiscus. Joan will discuss Sumi-e materials, basic brushwork, how to hold and load the brush with multiple colors and ink graduation. We will apply the knowledge to create Hibiscus in vibrant colors.
The afternoon session will cover lotus flowers. Joan will cover the floral structure, and use both
contours and freehand brushwork to paint the petals of lotus.
Sunday, October 6th, 2024: Lotus 2 and White Egret
The morning session will continue painting lotus. Joan will share unique brushworks to create lotus buds, seedpods, new leaves and large lotus leaves. The afternoon session will cover white
egret in minimal strokes. We will also work on creating a moon and applying a background wash without leaving obvious brush marks. Throughout the workshop, Joan will share composition and design typical to Sumi-e floral paintings, and how to use them in western
artworks.
Artists of all levels are welcome!
