WELKS MICE
Sugar Citizen Cliff Parks once wrote about Welks Mice "Feel good vibraphone heroes Welks Mice dropped a new single “Your Heart is the Purple Sage” that, in true Welks form, is virtually indescribable yet deeply affecting. Maybe it’s the naked, searching purity of Max Weiss’s vocals and the distinct sense that’s he singing TO YOU or his poetic and philosophical lyrics that come at you fast and insistent; maybe it’s the Andre Welks vibraphone that seem to gradually harmonize with your soul, or the intimate immediacy of the lo-fi production. In any case “Your Heart is the Purple Sage” is a refreshingly cathartic balm for the soul that feels just right, and it’s definitely worth a listen"
STAY SWEET: THE SUGAR CITY STORY
In the Summer of 2020 it became clear Sugar City would need to end it’s run as a vital community space due to the pandemic and it’s resulting financial fallout. At the time I was furloughed and looking for a creative project to fill my time. In speaking with Braden we devised a plan to explore the history of Sugar City, hearing from its members and its archive of footage, to enshrine the legacy of this crucial community resource. I spoke with a large number of folks, past and present members, attendees and performers to frame a retrospective that embodies the ways in which Sugar City uplifted the artist community and gave people a safe space to express themselves. This documentary is meant to serve as a time capsule of their efforts during their 11 year run and in so many ways, I hope it inspires the next generation of makers and doers to embody its mission.

ABOUT SUGAR CITY
Sugar City was Buffalo’s only legal, DIY, volunteer-run, all-ages performance venue until our closure at the start of the pandemic. Our goal is to provide an alternative space to share and create art and community projects based on participatory culture and a do-it-together attitude. Events and initiatives include, but are not limited to music, films, poetry readings, a zine library, meeting space, art gallery, workshops, and more. We want to break down the barriers of what is and isn’t “art” because in some way everyone is an artist.
