Violet Venable is an elderly, widowed socialite living in a wealthy suburb of New Orleans. She is grieving the death of her son, Sebastian, a poet, who died under mysterious circumstances the previous summer while holidaying with his cousin, Catherine Holly in Spain.
Upon Catherine’s return from Europe, Violet has had her niece committed to a private mental institution. Fearing Catherine may reveal the secret details of Sebastian’s homosexuality and violent, cannibalistic death, Violet is attempting to bribe a surgeon, Dr Cukrowicz into performing a lobotomy on her niece to erase all her memories from last summer. While also threatening Catherine’s mother and brother with disinheritance so they support her in suppressing Catherine’s version of events and preserve her late son’s reputation.
