--The Waco Friends of the Climate will hold its free quarterly styrofoam recycling event on Saturday, October 9, from 8am until 12 noon.
--The drive-through collection site will be the Cobbs Recycling Center, 2021 N 44th St., Waco 76710, as this event will be held in conjunction with the City of Waco.
--As before, we ask that participants stay in their cars, as volunteers remove the styrofoam from trunks and car interiors.
--All participants should wear masks, in light of the recent rapid spread of the delta variant of COVID-19, and the recommendation of the WHO, CDC, and county health district. Masks should be worn regardless of vaccination status.
--Styrofoam accepted: cups & other food containers, large blocks and molded pieces. Small pieces may be aggregated in bags.
--Not accepted: lids, peanuts, and non-styrofoam materials.
--Styrofoam should be clean & dry.
--Styrofoam will be processed in a densifier to remove the air and create dense plastic bricks/ingots. These bricks are used to produce products such as picture frames, rulers, keyboard parts, phone chasses, pallets, & eyeglass frames.
--This program is a volunteer effort by the Waco Friends of the Climate. No money is received by us for the styrofoam.
--Recycling styrofoam has multiple benefits: it keeps the plastic out of the landfill, where it releases toxins; keeps the material out of the land, air and ocean, where it creates ugly litter; prevents the plastic from being eaten by animals, where it may cause illness or death; prevents the styrofoam from entering the human food chain, where it may be harmful to humans; helps mitigate the climate crisis, as making plastic thru recycling releases much less GHG emissions than the production of new virgin plastic; prevents microplastic from interfering with the lifecycle of phytoplankton & zooplankton, both vital for our ecosystem.
--Many thanks to participants for saving styrofoam for this collection event.
