Please join us on Saturday, September 13, 10:00-11:30 AM for our first Campus Club Public Program of 2025 - 26!! This event is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, so feel free to share this announcement with friends.
Roberta Moudry, Architectural Historian, will lead us on a campus walking tour entitled: Style and Circumstance: Perspectives of South Campus

Saturday, September 13, 2025
Rain or shine

Meet at 10:00 AM in front of McGraw Tower, informally known as the Bell Toweror Clock Tower. The Tower is adjacent to Uris Library.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM: Extending from Sage Chapel to Cascadilla Gorge, South Campus was first developed in the 1870s with the construction of Sage College for Women and Sage Chapel. Over 150 years, this landscape has been filled with buildings and spaces housing diverse academic programs and student services. Because South Campus was built incrementally and for varied purposes, it serves as an open-air textbook of architectural styles. Style as a category of formal analysis has limitations, operating independently of a building's meanings and uses. But we will use style differently, viewing structures and placing them within the university history and landscape as well as within their stylistic category. For example, South Campus is home to two waves of Gothic architecture, separated by 50 years. We will consider the roots of Gothic architecture, as well as the meanings and materials that shape different expressions of this style.
In a short half-mile walk, we will review Gothic, Romanesque, Modern and Postmodern as architectural styles/movements and observe how they were employed to house the academic programs and stated mission of Cornell.

Roberta's excellent tours are always popular and we look forward to seeing you there!

Notes:

● An email reminder will be sent on 9/12 (the day prior to the event) confirming whether the tour is happening or announcing it has been cancelled due to a prediction of hazardous weather. You can also check the Campus Club Programs web page and our Facebook page for updates.

● There are limited parking spaces close to the Tower behind Willard Straight, Annabel Taylor and Sibley Halls, and on Central Ave., the road on which the Johnson Art Museum is located. There is abundant parking at the Forest Home Drive and Hoy Road Parking Garages (please note that Hoy Rd. is closed between Campus Rd. and Duffield Loading Dock entrance, so please access Hoy Rd. from Dryden Rd./Rte 366). Parking permits for these locations are not required on weekends. At all campus parking locations, please be aware of signage and restricted spaces such as handicap and reserved parking.

● Starting last year, we moved this annual event to a weekend when parking is more available than on weekdays. Additionally, weekends avoid the heavy pedestrian traffic when classes change.
REMEMBER: This program is open to the public, but you need to be a member to attend activity groups! If you haven't yet renewed your membership, you can do so by visiting our Membership Page on our Website at:
