Join Camino Manitoba for an easy urban walk to discover an often-overlooked greenway in west Winnipeg. The Sturgeon Creek greenway is a paved trail that follows the naturalized banks of the Sturgeon Creek from where it meets the Assiniboine River north west to Saskatchewan Avenue. Along the trail we will stop for a visit at Old Grant's Mill and learn about the Metis history of Cuthbert Grant (1793-1854). Grant is considered to be the first leader of the Metis Nation in Manitoba. In 1829 he built the first water-powered mill in Western Canada, located on the banks of Sturgeon Creek. Grant was active in the fur trade and one of the leaders defending Metis rights in the Red River settlement.
Come learn about this piece of the Metis story on our Treaty 1 land, walk together, and reflect on the importance and gift of water as one of the lifebloods of our land.
Meet at 9:45 am at Woodhaven Community Centre 200 Glendale Blvd (parking available at community centre).
This is an easy, accessible / wheelchair accessible walk that can be completed entirely on paved walkways. The walk is a loop and is approximately 1 hour each way (2 hours total)
