Two lectures on the Gobelin and Mortlake Tapestries
About this Event

We will have two lectures on these two famous tapestry factories. The Gobelin factory was in Paris and the Mortlake factory of course was down the road from us.

Tapestry was not only a highly prized art form it had a range of roles to play from room warmer to religious story and from propaganda to celebrating triumphs. In these two lectures we will begin by looking at how tapestries are made as there is much more to it than might be imagined. Then we will look at some of the great owners of tapestries and their sets.

In Lecture 1 we will cover the 15th and 16th centuries.

In Lecture 2 we will cover the 17th to 21 centuries, including arts and crafts tapestries.

By the end, our hope is that you will never again simply walk past tapestries on your way to fine art but stop and give them due consideration and respect.

Meeting place - We will meet downstairs at Duke Street Church, Duke Street, Richmond TW9 1DH. Entrance is via the door at the back of the church - down Quadrant Road and through the first archway on the left into the church's private car park.
