PRACTICES OF FREEDOM
Time May 2 at 17:30. Place Konstakademien, Fredsgatan 12.
Muoto, meaning form in Finnish, is an architectural office founded by Gilles Delalex and Yves Moreau in Paris, 2003. Muoto’s work features minimal structures that can combine different functions, evolve in time, and merge economical and aesthetic issues. Its activities cover the fields of architecture, urban planning, design, teaching and scientific research. Since its establishment, the office has realized various projects ranging from master plans, public buildings, housing, and installations. Recently, it has been selected to curate the French Pavilion at the 2023 Venice Biennale. Gilles Delalex is also Professor at the Architecture School of Paris-Malaquais, where he heads the department of Theory, History, and Project.

So why focus on such notions as freedom and occupation? Because since Foucault’s ideas about carceral space back in the mid-1970s, it has to be said that it is a tradition, in philosophy and in the social sciences, and even in the media in general, to think of architecture in terms of constraint, in terms of restriction. To criticise it as a system of control. That is not entirely false. But perhaps it could also be analysed in terms of what it allows, the way it creates possibilities. The way it permits something unexpected. And that’s what we can call freedom. On the other hand, occupation, or the capacity to be occupied, could be the main and most initial vocation of architecture. And that certain architecture encourages occupation and some doesn’t. Some buildings and some don’t. So the question is what would such an architecture of occupation look like? There is of course no clear and definite answer to that question. But we’ll try to refl ect on that.
Wine and snacks from 17:30, lecture starts at 18:00. The event is free of charge, and there is no advance booking of seats. Organizer Stockholms Arkitektförening through Johannes Brattgård and Eugenia Bevz.
