Studio L14 Presents: Paul Birken (Minneapolis, US) Studio L14 Presents...
An event, a series of events meant to show Hamiltonians what else is out there. Leaders in their craft, often for decades, but with little to no North American influence. Until now.

PAUL BIRKEN (U.S.)
A master of his craft, creating the framework for the rest of us to learn from. Paul has been releasing records since 1996 and has a bevy of rave classics up his sleeve under different names. The last time we had him in Hamilton in 2017 the most common refrain heard during his set was along the lines of "how the hell is he doing that!". Maybe this time we'll find out.
What does the bleeding edge of Techno sound like? There are as many answers to that as there are people on this pale blue dot. My personal opinion is that which Paul Birken does with his machines. Paul squeezes sounds from his boxes through pure exploration and inquisitiveness. Cutting, arranging, smashing those sounds into the grunged-out, stompy punk that is his version of Techno. Acid. House. Blues. Whatever he may.
He's making the music the others play. He's the one inspiring the the DJs you've heard of. In searching, researching what to write here to get across my point I came across a user [Rev. Dr. Dwight Trash] on Soundcloud with a Paul Birken playlist that has the following description: "This guy is quite possibly your favorite techno artist's favorite techno artist. To me he's like the Jimi fuckin Hendrix of this shit!" This. This times a bunch of this's.
He's back in Hamilton after more than 6 years away. Before Studio L14 existed Kevin and I did an event with Paul at the Staircase theatre. An obviously sub-optimal Techno event venue. Which is why Studio L14 was needed and subsequently created. Now we have an optimal venue. It's time for Paul to return, to see what he's started and what we've continued on. Let's show him a Hamilton welcome. Let's give him the attention he never seeks on his own. Just this one night at least.
