In 2025, the world has seen Trump's tariffs, high-stakes meetings between world leaders regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine and heated debates surrounding the war in Gaza. In a time of global instability and rapid changes in the international political landscape, Europe has sought unity and a stronger voice on the international stage. The European Union has pushed for a seat at the table and tried to be a voice of reason in complex times, but big questions remain. What is the EU’s role in the world? How can the EU work towards peace, security and prosperity in uncertain times? How are ongoing conflicts around the globe affecting the EU? What does the future look like for the EU?On Monday, September 22, Studentafton is pleased to welcome Thierry Carlier, French Ambassador to Sweden; Doris Danler, Austrian Ambassador to Sweden; Christina Lehtinen, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Finland; and Kim de Jong, Chargée d’Affaires at the Embassy of the Netherlands, for an evening on the European Union’s challenges and opportunities.
Times today are defined by tariffs, technology and trust and the Union stands at a crossroad. The EU has to navigate global trade tensions, economic dependencies and shifting alliances. At the same time, technology is rapidly evolving and demands bold action. The Union faces the challenges of regulating AI and digital markets, while at the same time being able to compete on a global stage, an ambition reflected in initiatives like the AI Act. Meanwhile, skepticism towards the Union’s influence continues to grow, both within Europe and abroad, making it more important than ever for the EU to rebuild confidence and demonstrate its relevance on the world stage.
This evening is arranged in collaboration with EU-days Lund and will be moderated by Marius Lyckå, editor in chief at Lundagård.
