Structural Color from Liquid Crystals

During this workshop, we will explore structural color as a tool for biobased art.
About this Event

Explore the mesmerizing world of structural color — the brilliant, iridescent hues found in nature on butterfly wings, beetle shells, and bird feathers. Unlike pigment-based color, structural color is created by the way light reflects and scatters off microscopic surface patterns. These colors, shimmering blues, radiant greens, golds, reds, and purples, are the result of nano and microstructures, not dyes or chemicals.

In this hands-on workshop, we’ll dive into the fascinating science and art of structural color using cellulose-based liquid crystals (hydroxypropyl cellulose or HPC). These liquid crystals are made from plant-based cellulose nanocrystals, which self-assemble into helical structures that reflect specific wavelengths of light.

We’ll combine science, sustainability, and creativity by painting with light to create unique framed artworks. Using pre-made bioplastic sheets as our canvas, we’ll layer on shimmering liquid crystals to craft compositions that change with every angle of light.

In this workshop participants will:
  • Mix HPC-based liquid crystals to form colorful colloids
  • Learn how structural color works and how to apply it to bioplastics
  • Use natural, non-toxic materials to create bioplastic compositions
  • “Paint” with iridescent liquid crystals to achieve dazzling visual effects
  • Frame your finished piece to take home or display

Meet the Instructor

Catherine Mondoa (she/her) is a materials scientist with a passion for innovation and sustainability. During the day, she works for Material ConneXion, communicating with material manufacturers and supporting brands with materials selection and inspiration. Prior to joining Material ConneXion, she studied natural, polymer materials. As part of this study, she collaborated with Dr. Ahu Gumrah Dumanli-Parry’s lab. There, she had the opportunity to work with liquid crystals to explore structural color and its responses to magnetically induced strain. Ever since, she continues to explore her material fascination through her work and her participation in Genspace.
