In the face of unrelenting pressure from the American administration the government introduced Bill C-2 — the Strong Borders Act — an omnibus bill that provides sweeping power. Billed as necessary to bolster border security and reinforce the country’s immigration and asylum system the bill includes provisions that have little apparent connection to securing the Canada-US border — such as giving government authority to open mail allowing requests for information (that cannot be refused) and issuing secret orders to disclose information.
The impact of the bill’s broad powers will facilitate requests from American and other governments to “any person that provides a service to the public” for information that could include personal information corporate strategies donor identities and other details that could be weaponized to ruin competitors discredit dissenters and undermine opponents.
