Haydn String Quartet, op 9 no 6 in A major
Turina, "Bull Fighters Prayer"
Shostakovich, Quartet no 2
We begin our DSQ Autumn programme with Haydn's quartet op9 no6 in Amajor, which was composed in 1769, at a time that he was developing his ideas on the musical possibilities of writing for string quartet.
Joaquin Turina was keen to promote his Spanish/Andalusian cultural heritage in his music. The Bullfighter’s prayer, composed in 1925, was written after a visit to a bull fight. In this work we have glimpses the toreador’s bravado, and his prayers to protect him from danger.
Shostakovich’s dramatic and haunting quartet is the 2nd of 15. It was composed during WW2 when he was staying at the Soviet Union’s retreat in the mountains, which they provided for artists.
