“Strike at the Wind” is a significant historical drama that has been part of North Carolina’s cultural heritage since its debut in 1976. The play, performed at the Weymouth Center, tells the story of the Lowrie War of 1865 and focuses on Lumbee hero Henry Berry Lowrie. It depicts his seven-year battle for justice against the Confederate Home Guard after they killed his father and brother. The drama is celebrated for its powerful storytelling and cultural importance, honoring the Lumbee people’s struggle and resilience. The Weymouth Center has been a collaborative space for staging the play, helping bring this vital story to wider audiences beyond its original home in Robeson County. The production is known for its dedicated cast, many of whom return year after year, and for its role in preserving Lumbee history through compelling performance art.
