Street Photo Walks are series of events devoted to revealing the secrets of street photography, training one’s eye to spot what tends to go unnoticed and capturing the candid life on street. Organized by the Finnish Museum of Photography, these walks are led by street photographers and enthusiasts of urban landscape that share their gaze, tips and tricks – Kasperi Kropsu, Naser Bayat & Ignacio Pérez Pérez, Jaana Rinne, Jari Pulkkinen, and Lorenzo ‘SerraGlia’ Servi.

“NOT TO FIND ONE’S WAY AROUND A CITY DOES NOT MEAN MUCH. BUT TO LOSE ONE’S WAY IN A CITY, AS ONE LOSES ONE’S WAY IN A FOREST, REQUIRES SOME SCHOOLING.”
— Walter Benjamin

In our everyday places, do we perceive the beauty designed by accident? Do we stop to appreciate it? How can we find extraordinary sights along our daily routes?

We’re used to walking the same routes every day; from home to work and back. We’re so keen to get where we're going as quickly as possible that we ignore all the beauty and wonder around us. The result is that we tend not to see anything special in our daily routines — not because there's nothing interesting to look at, but because we're paying attention only to practical matters.
It's different when we go somewhere for the first time — as a tourist, for instance. We notice things that surprise and inspire us. But is it possible to discover something wonderful without having to travel to new places? How can we bring this tourist's perspective into our own city?

This Street Photo Walk is a refreshing workshop run by Lorenzo ‘SerraGlia’ Servi, an Italian-born architect, visual artist/designer living in Finland. Inspired by the Readymade and Situationist movements, this Street Photo Walk aims to transform the banal into the extraordinary, the unseen into things to admire. Participants are invited to explore the urban scape with new eyes, observe the city from a more curious perspective and photograph interesting urban findings.

SerraGlia’s passion for documenting urban visual traces – scratches, marks, posters, and other objects, has led to a two-day City Walk Workshop that later resulted in a book ‘Art is Everywhere, How to Really Look at Things’ published by BIS Publishers. This work was also exhibited at the Finnish Museum of Photography under the title ‘City Wonders: Helsinki’ (2017). His latest book ‘Signs Fiction’ is part of his ongoing art publishing project about cities and urban wandering.
