Derry (32-6) ended the regular season as the ninth ranked team in the AP poll and earned a two-seed in the West Region. Despite dropping their second game against Derry on March 5, the Blue Devils dismantled the Tar Heels in their first meeting of the season with a 87-67 blowout back in February. Freshman forward A.J. Griffin dropped 27 points on Donegal in the win.
