ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Strange Creature Creations invites participants to join two of Arts Project Australia’s iconic artists; multi-disciplinary magpie enthusiast and badge-maker Miles Howard-Wilks, and soft sculpture extraordinaire Terry Williams, to create creatures both hard and soft.

The workshop will have two components which you can choose to do one both aspects of. Draw and make a badge with Miles, or sit alongside Terry, soak in his sewing prowess while you hand stitch and stuff a strange soft creature of your own.

Bookings required for the soft creature component (limited spots). Drop-ins welcome any time between 1pm and 3pm to make a badge.

Strange Creature Creations takes place in the thick of Strange Planet, a critter laden exhibition curated by Miles Howard-Wilks, Sandy Fernée, and Sarah Lamanna.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Miles Howard-Wilks is a multi-disciplinary artist, specialising in painting, ceramics, photography and digital art. Thematically his practice is distinctly Australian, featuring landscapes and seascapes with recurring motifs of iconic animals, landmarks and transport. Miles has a cinematic perspective which he executes without reference, plucking complex scenes from his mind that often reveal his detailed imagining of what lies beneath visible land and sea levels. An avid Collingwood supporter, Miles incorporates magpies or their essence into nearly every artwork he creates.

Miles Howard-Wilks has worked in the studio at Arts Project Australia since 2000. He has been in numerous group exhibitions nationally and internationally.

Terry Williams’ career spans three decades and reflects a diverse exploration of materials and techniques. He is best known for his soft sculpture which is defined by his deft and obsessive interpretation of figures, animals and objects, both real and imagined. The tactile, pillow-like works constructed with found materials feature exaggerated, conspicuous stitching and are intensely physical and bulging in their form. Williams does not consciously work within common traditions of art but instead adopts an immersive and idiosyncratic process, ruminating on and storing ideas until they manifest into complex and multi-faceted creations.

Williams has worked at the Arts Project Australia studio program since 1989. His work is held in private collections throughout Australia and internationally.
