Storytime with M. García Peña

Author M. García Peña will share her heartfelt new picture book, When We Find Her (illustrated by André Ceolin) a touching story about family, memory, and the power of food to keep our loved ones close.

In this beautifully written tale, Lila and her Abuelo Carlos miss Abuela Ana’s laughter, dancing, and cooking. To feel close to her again, they set out to recreate her signature dish—sancocho—discovering along the way that every ingredient holds a cherished memory.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

M. García Peña was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and is a proud founding member of the Latinx KidLit collective, Las Musas Books. A graduate of The New School’s MFA program, she finds inspiration in family, community, and cultural storytelling. Her works celebrate the everyday beauty of Latinx life and the ways love and memory shape who we are.

Lila and her Abuelo Carlos miss Abuela Ana’s laughter, her dancing, and especially her cooking. Without her, home just doesn’t feel the same. But when they find one of her old recipes tucked away a list for Abuela’s famous sancocho they decide to bring her spirit back into the kitchen.

Together, they visit the market, gathering ingredients that spark stories and memories of Abuela’s joy. Each flavor, each smell, and each laugh shared along the way reminds them that love never truly leaves us, it just takes on new forms.

Filled with warmth, rich culture, and sensory details, When We Find Her is a tender celebration of Puerto Rican family life, the comfort of cooking, and the ways our loved ones remain close in every meal, memory, and moment shared.
