As part of West Duluth’s Winter Out West restival, we are thrilled to welcome author and educator Dr. Katrina Phillips and visual artist and educator Sam Zimmerman for a storytime and signing for their new book I Am On Indigenous Land. This wonderful children’s book has simple, lyrical text and vibrant panoramic illustrations. It explores the beauty and resources of thirteen ancestral Indigenous lands and how we all use those lands each day. Simple poetry and portrayals of children and families enjoying rivers, bike paths, beaches, and parks show how everyday activities can include honoring Indigenous nations and cultures. This will be a special opportunity for children and our community to learn and ask questions about Ojibwe culture.
Author and educator Dr. Katrina Phillips is a citizen of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe. She earned her BA and PhD in History from the University of Minnesota, and she teaches Native American history and the history of the American
West at Macalester College. She has written several books, including numerous books out including Indigenous Environmentalism.
Artist and educator Sam Zimmerman / Zhaawanoogiizhik is a direct descendant of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe). He has helped create several books including Following My Spirit Home and How the Birds Got Their Songs.
