A bit about YOUR HOSTS - Iona and Svend-Erik.
I (Iona), am British/Irish and living in Denmark, and have worked for many years as a coach with a particular focus on imagination and story as part of the coaching process, both individually and in groups. I am a story-teller and story-carrier, trained at Emerson College storytelling school in the UK, and I’m particularly curious about what happens when people’s inner lives come into conversation with stories (whether myths, fairy tales, folk tales, or stories from life).

Svend-Erik Engh is a Scotland based Danish storyteller, and has been performing and teaching storytelling since 1994. He has created 5 storytelling shows in English with musician Neil Sutcliffe and History Press published his book Danish Folktales in 2023. In his word: “When I was a young man in Copenhagen, Denmark, there was a time when I did not know my way into life. I was desperate and isolated. Stories, first in theatre and films, later told on stage or, even better, under the branches of a tree in Kings Garden in front of the Castle Rosenborg, made me feel that I belonged to humankind. Even after more than 30 years of storytelling and teaching, I still experience the sentiment I felt back then, recognizing that stories are an excellent means of connecting with people.” Have a listen to this podcast for more of a flavour of Svend-Erik: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/creative-engagement-storyteller-story-coach-svend-erik/id1604629717?i=1000692175412
Telling a story is only in part about the specific craft of oral storytelling. There is another important part - our relationship to the story/stories we tell. At least for me (Iona), it’s more than a performance art, it’s a way of living and being human, it’s about cultivating relationship to story, it’s about fostering a mythic imagination. We’ll unpack these a little on the day.
The day will involve getting to know each other a little and exploring how each of us relates to story already - drawing out the experience of the group. Svend-Erik and I will probably tell some stories, and introduce some fun ways of being curious about them, about how they live in us, and relate to our lives and the world we live in.
Building on this foundation, we will offer various exercises to help us explore ways of getting to know the stories, and simple ways of beginning to play around with crafting and telling oral stories in a fun and light way.
Depending on the desires of the group that comes, there will be space in the second half of the day for anyone who would like to bring a story they already know they are wanting to tell, to give it a go in a warm, supportive and encouraging space, and to hear some loving feedback to help you grow in your telling of it. These do not need to be finished pieces - in fact better if they are instead works in progress. The hope is that the day is one of fun, growth, and support. It is also very welcome if you definitely do not want to tell in front of the group, and instead participate by bringing your listening and attention - an essential ingredient for the story tellers too!
Part of the reason for offering this taster day is that Svend-Erik and I are wanting to offer more story-crafting spaces, possibly even a programme of some sort, and part of that is finding out from you what is wanted, or not. There will be a chance for some conversation towards the end of the day about possible pathways forward.
We hope you join us, for this story exploration! Any questions, please get in touch :)
