Storyopolis Saturday Club, runs most term -time Saturdays from10am-2pm at Volcano Theatre space, on Swansea High Street. It is FREE and aimed at 8-14yr olds. Parents/Guardians must drop the children off and sign in, ensuring emergency contact details are provided etc. Children under 12 must also be collected. Thank you.
The club provides a welcoming and encouraging space for young people to develop and amplifie their creative voices, through multiple artforms: Prose, Poetry, Scriptwriting, Drama, Comics, Storyboards, Zines and Illustration.
It is run by multidisciplinary Artist Elissa Evans who along with brilliant creative Mentors, skill share ideas, narrative plotting, image making, and storytelling techniques with the attendees. Storyopolis has created a welcome safe space, in our Volcano home, where young people can come and develop story ideas, write, draw, share and chat, and if they want, just read or sit and be surrounded by the creativity and simply absorb it. Rule no.1 Everyone has fun and enjoys themselves.
So far, the club has been a resounding success, and a variety of different experiences have been provided. These have included: Welsh Dragons with Thomas Docherty. Songwriting with Bill Taylor -Beales. Climate slogans and t-shirts with Laura Reynolds. Personal bookmarks and illuminated letters with Elissa Evans. Journalling with Roz Moreton. Puppets for animation with Lucy Donald. Welsh Myths and storytelling with Cath Little. Cut out Poetry with Mrs Penn Thomas. Thinking and creating your story with Kelly Keegan. Comic book characters with Pete and Mark. Graffiti with Kyle and Ceri. Zines with Jono Atkinson. Collage transfer prints with Bill Chambers. And so much more ...
Following the successful pilot year (2022-23) the Saturday Club time slot has been extended to four hours (10-2PM), and has a more informal vibe to it. Young people are invited to drop in and catch up with one another and our creative mentors who will help develop ideas, and generally be around for assistance and creative inspiration and sharing. We will continue developing our club library space with books that reflect the Saturday Club’s aims – Developing a Creative Voice. And also hope to have a few visits to our wonderful local Library and Museums.
Refreshments are provided, but we recommend bringing lunch/snacks if staying for the whole four hours.
