Share your memories of the Kite neighbourhood as part of an archive held by ARU, to ensure the history is a learning tool for years to come.
About this Event

Do you have memories of the Kite that you would like to be part of an archive held by Anglia Ruskin University that ensures the history of 'The Kite' is a learning and shaping tool for years to come?

Would you like your memories to help shape new experiences at Together Culture that make a broader story of Cambridge available to all?

Perhaps you lived or worked in The Kite? Or Perhaps it was a relative?

Perhaps you moved into a house with history or inherited a scrap book or a toy or toaster (you name it!) bought from a shop in The Kite that has a story attached to it?

Whatever your tie or connection - we want to know!

Drop into a Story-Sharing Tea Party, part of heritage project 'Let's Go Fly the Kite', and share your unique story. Together with our Story Finders, we’re gathering personal tales from locals to celebrate the diverse history of the Kite neighbourhood and envision a more inclusive future.

There are four Story-Sharing Tea Parties taking place:

  • Tuesday 8 October, 2 - 6pm (Free Press Pub) - book tickets above
  • Friday 11 October, 9 - 11am (Together Culture, 5 Fitzroy Street)
  • Thursday 24 October, 6 - 8pm (Together Culture, 5 Fitzroy Street)
  • Saturday 16 November, 12 - 5pm (Together Culture, 5 Fitzroy Street)

About this story sharing

We're inviting you to share your story as part of heritage project 'Let's Go Fly the Kite', funded by the Heritage Fund.

The Kite has a rich heritage of collaboration and entrepreneurialism born out of necessity. The legacy is vibrancy and an openness that is still recognised by people who live in and frequent the neighbourhood, but cannot put their finger on why it exists.

It’s a rich culture upon which to build a community mindset that creates a future of collaboration and entrepreneurialism that can be shaped by opportunity and a healing of class division - or, ‘town versus the gown’.

That’s why Together Culture, ARU, and the Cambridge Room are working together on the ‘Let’s Go Fly the Kite’ project funded by the Heritage Fund. We will gather people in a citizen science project to reveal the history of the Kite, create a roadmap for how the people who live, have lived in and frequent the Kite wish to build upon their ingenious heritage to shape the future. In essence this is a pilot Citizens’ Entrepreneurship project to create an experience economy offer that embeds the Kite as The Science of Life Quarter.

What is 'The Kite'?

‘The Kite’ refers to an area in central Cambridge where the boundaries look like a kite. Built in the 19th century to attract workers to power the University, residents of The Kite were prohibited from using City Centre amenities.

Out of necessity, a culture of inclusion, ingenuity, and cooperation emerged. Progressive mindsets enabled the opening of the first municipal birth control clinic in England, elected some of our first female leaders, and cultivated a nationally important cooperative movement.
