Stornoway takes its name from the only town on the North West Scottish island of Lewis. Singer-guitarist Brian Briggs, keyboardist-stringer Jonathan Ouin and brothers Ollie Steadman (bass) and Rob Steadman (drums) form the group while at Oxford University. Their self-titled debut EP showcases a swagger & largely acoustic sound - often compared to Belle & Sebastian and XTC. With their youthful folk-pop sound and lyrics rooted in nature, literature and youthful romance, their debut album Beachcomber's Windowsill (2009) immediately caught on, resulting in several festival passages, including Glastonbury. On Tales from Terra Firma (2013) and Bonxie (2015), they broaden their sound with psychedelic and baroque pop elements. A year later, the group split in friendship with an extensive farewell tour. Six years on, Stornoway reunite as a trio, with Briggs, Quinn and Steadman at the helm, for a series of festival appearances. In 2023, they release their 4th studio album Dig the Mountain! which does very well in the UK charts with high demand for live performances. A first limited tour brings them to the AB for the first time.
Their very first Christmas single, a special version of 'Excelsior', featuring the Gwalia Male Voice Choir, and mixed by Mike Lindsay (Hannah Peel / Laura Marling / Jon Hopkins), is a song that reminds us of the importance of connecting with each other and with nature. A great prelude to an undoubtedly heartwarming concert.
